How the 10 Commandments relate to Paganism

How does the 10 Commandments of the Old Testament relate to Paganism you might be wondering? How do they relate to a Coven? Most of them do believe it or not. I would say except for the first one, most of them do. Let’s first begin and look at the 10 Commandments:

The Ten Commandments

1. I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not have strange gods before me.

2. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

3. Remember thou keep the Sabbath Day.

4. Honor thy Father and thy Mother.

5. Thou shalt not kill.

6. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

7. Thou shalt not steal.

8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.

10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.

How they are related to Paganism

1. Not related for we believe in different Gods who have different purposes.

2. Don’t use the Gods names to curse anyone.

3. Remember Sabbats and Esbats.

4. Honor & Obey your High Priest & High Priestess.

5. Don’t kill.

6. Don’t have sex outside your marriage unless agreed upon by the betrothed.

7. Don’t steal.

8. Don’t lie.

9. See #6.
10. See #7.

Why am I pulling out the 10 Commandments you might ask? Well here’s why. On this past Friday night, I had my Coven over to my house for a night of crafts on the Eve of Imbolc. We were making crafts to honor the Pagan Goddess (and Christianized Saint) Brigid. We made Brigid Dollies, wands, & Brigid Crosses. Everything was going great. We were laughing, joking, crafting, and listening to Imbolc Lore as read by my High Priestess, Berkana. I even asked my wife, Sunnie, to take some pictures with my digital camera of us as we were making our Crafts and after she did, she put the camera on the table. At the end of the night, everyone left one by one or two by two. My HPS & a Seeker stuck around after everyone left.

My HPS had given a ride to the Seeker and while he waited, he asked if he could use my computer which is located in my basement, to which I said ok. My HPS helped me make a wreath in the kitchen which symbolized the Wheel of the Year. Earlier in the night, my basement was used by my Coveners, of who I all trusted, who were smokers to smoke in instead of going outside since that is the only place in my house which I smoke. Anyhow the night was perfect, or so I thought.

On Saturday, everyone came over again to celebrate Imbolc. We had a beautiful Ritual in which my 2 toddlers even joined in the circle to celebrate the Sabbat. At the end of the night there was me and 3 Coveners left and I forgot to take pictures of our dollies and went to get my camera. I couldn’t find it, which is sometimes a common thing in my house, so I used my wife’s camera. Everyone left and I fell asleep watching TV in the basement.

On Sunday in the true Spirit of Imbolc, I did some Spring cleaning in my basement with my Altar. I cleared everything off of it, wiped it down, and polished it. I placed the “Wheel of the Year” wreath on my Altar and redesigned the rest of it to fit what I needed on my Altar. I went to charge my cell phone in the charger that is always plugged in next to my bar and found it gone. Not only was my charger gone, but my PDA/Palm Pilot along with its case that was on the bar! What the F***! I then went and tore apart upstairs to look for my camera & came up empty handed. I was now missing a digital camera and my PDA, the total value for both including the memory cards in each of them was $655. I was robbed! The last time I saw either was on Friday night, my PDA was on the table next to my bar and that was at 7PM and my Camera was about 10:30 PM and it was on the kitchen table. I remember now not seeing the camera after everyone left as I cleaned up. I ruled out my kids because they were out on Friday night & Saturday night. When they were home, they were upstairs only either in the Kitchen, Living Room, or Bedrooms. They did not go down the basement at all. I didn’t want to do it, but the blame went to my Coven, specifically those who were down my basement alone.

I put out a bunch of emails & text messages on Sunday and during the rest of the week until now about stealing and how it will effect them at least 3 fold or more. I have gotten responses back from people asking why I didn’t blame my teens, but that was simple….they either weren’t home or in the basement at all. Anyhow we were supposed to meet for a New Moon Esbat tonight, but instead we are all meeting at a local Diner to hash this out. Until I get my stuff back or $600 cash or money order for the missing property, all Coven activities are suspended.

I also have another idea too. Since it isn’t fair to effect the Spirituality of everyone, I could keep the people that weren’t in the basement as members of the Coven of which happen to be my first 2 students and my HPS. Is this fair to kick everyone else out because 2 out of the 3 people that would get the boot are innocent? What to do. I really thought that everyone who was in the Coven was in it with Perfect Love and Perfect Trust. This is why I started this off with the 10 Commandments because these not only hold weight in Judeo/Christian/Islamic Religions, but 90% of them in Paganism as well.

Will I ever get my stuff back? Maybe to Doubtful would be my response because a thief cares about nobody but themselves. A thief is not only selfish, but cold hearted. A thief has their own agenda and will go by only their own set of rules. Anyhow, I started some Spellwork to get my property back and if I don’t get my stuff back tonight, I will turn it up a notch and the thief will have to now deal with the wrath of the Gods. I will make their own negative Karma their biddings. I will cast nothing of evil intent, but their own treachery will be their undoing and they will have to deal with the way their life will go. Believe you me, my Magick is powerful and not only did they disrespect their Covenmate and their High Priest, but the representative of the God incarnate within their Coven.

Blessings of Darkness & of Light,

Caedmon

What a horrible thing to have happen to anyone. Especially since, IMO, a betrayal by a covenmate seems to cut deeper than a betrayal by a "mere" friend, I know I've been there.

I am so sorry for what happened and hope that things resolve themselves.

Thank you sooo much for your kind words. You are right on the money a Covenmate betrayal. That goes deeper especially since these are the people whose energy you share during a Circle. They will now have to deal with what ever retribution the Gods have in store for them either in this life or next & it will be eating them up inside just waiting for something to happen and not knowing when it will happen, but trust me, it will.
